Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior
at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes
at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada's medical
condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.
I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and
I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the
man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and
kindness.
I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the
show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would

Smith’s personal connection to what he calls God is perhaps less formal
than organized religion. He seeks the higher power when there are no
more answers on Earth.
“I believe that there are absolutely unquestionably forces that work in
the universe that science can’t explain, and I think there’s an end to
human knowledge,” Smith said. “There is an end to human knowledge. And
at that end of human knowledge, beyond that into the unknown, we have to
call it something in order for us to be able to talk about it. And I

“I was raised in a Baptist household, went to a Catholic church, lived
in a Jewish neighborhood, and had the biggest crush on the Muslim girls
from one neighborhood over,” Smith said. “I don’t believe that the
Muslims have all the answers, I don’t believe the Christians have all
the answer, or the Jews have all the answers. So I love my God, my
higher power. It’s mine and mine alone. I create my connection and I
decide how my connection is going to be.”

find that energy whether it’s prayer, people will go too far. There’s
things that people do to try to connect to an energy that we all know is

Spanish atheist Almodóvar gave an insider’s glimpse at proceedings from
his seat in the stalls. Here, “very close to the protagonists” when Will
Smith slapped Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife’s alopecia,

The joke was not in any manner a put down but fit for role (ie. no
different to saying I look forward to seeing you in Cleopatra II) as an
actress unfortunately having a medical condition of which Chris Rock was
unaware.
In the absence of malice by impetus of an innocuous jibe (ie. be in
accord; agree RATHER THAN an insulting or mocking remark; a taunt
derived from Old French giber 'handle roughly'), that the violent act
was disproportionate (ie. Jada Pinkett Smith is observed laughing) to
any outrage for the religious tennis family values Will Smith was
allegedly present at the OSCARS for and over which he subsequently
received an award as best actor.
NOTE: The expression began life in the late 1700s and differs from the
19th century Dixie term, 'cottonpicker', in that the latter was
derogatory and racist, whereas 'cotton-picking' referred directly to the
difficulty and harshness of gathering the crop.
This didn't extend to the specific expression 'KEEP YOUR COTTON-PICKING
HANDS OFF OF ME'. This no doubt alludes to the horny, calloused (and
usually black) hands that picked cotton.
