JAI MAHARAJ AND THE VARIOUS FAQs WHICH FOLLOW HIM
April 30, 2010 update: For the record, the newsgroup:
alt.flame.jay-stevens is, in addition to the newsgroup
alt.bonehead.jai-maharaj, is an additional outlet for expression and a
resource for archived information.
April 22, 2010: For the record, Jai Maharaj (aka Jay Stevens), has his own
nesgroup: alt.fan.jai-maharaj where he and his few cult followers hang
out, but he spams many other newsgroups. Also, for the record, people who
do not agree with Mr. J-M and people who have low to very low opinion of him
have an additional NG outlet for their views: alt.bonehead.jai-maharaj.
This represents an additional reference source, in the archives, for
additional information including defects in Mr. J-M's thinking and
integrity, for people to use in trying to figure out what makes the guy
tick.
April 13, 2010: This document is a summary of Google searches for FAQs
about Jai Maharaj (aka Jay Stevens). It quotes prior documents appearing
on the internet and they are reproduced, below, in the public interest.
One of the major FAQs is apparently no longer hosted. As a general
observation, Mr. Maharaj appears to be disliked more than liked in the
usenet community. This document may be revised without notice.

New JAI MAHARAJ FAQ
(this, fourth draft, May 28,2009)
(third draft, May 14, 2009)
The Problems of "Jai Maharaj" (aka Jay Stevens)
(In the public interest)
-----------------
BACKGROUND: The author of this document became interested in "Jai Maharaj"
in the Spring of 2009 when large numbers of posts from him (email address
given as "***@mantra.com") appeared on a number of newsgroups (eg.
alt.computer.consultants, alt.fan.jai-maharaj, etc). From one newsserver
carrying alt.fan.jai-maharaj there were a total of about 3,600 posts from
3/9/09 to 5/12/09, a period of slightly more than two months. Out of those,
he posted 1,453, or about 40% (At various times, there cold be 10-15 other
regular posters making up the other 60% of the posts).
A careful review of 190 of his posts from Mar 9, 2009, to Mar 23, 2009
(about two weeks) shows the following categories:
Informational (variety of topics): 41 posts
Anti-Christian (sexual abuse reports): 36 posts
Commentary (dialog, response): 25 posts
Regional politics (S. Asia, etc): 18 posts
Anti-Obama: 17 posts
Pro-Hindu: 12 posts
Anti-Islam/Muslim: 11 posts
Anti-West/Anti-America: 10 posts
Other: 20 posts
All of the above posts except the "Commentary" posts were primarily composed
of text made by "copy-and-paste" of parts or all of material from other
websites and mostly from "freerepublic.com" and followed by a "fair use"
claim for exemption from copyright protection.
News item coverage was therefore biased and prejudiced along sectarian and
political lines.
A Google search on "Jai Maharaj" easily brings up two FAQs on him (and they
were not written by myself) but they were clearly annoyed by his behavior
and posting practices on USENET.
The content of his posts give rise to the seven questions below.
--------------
Q1. Does "Jai Maharaj" (aka Jay Stevens) display offensive intollerant
religious prejudice?
Origin: He has posted a large number of "copy and paste" articles
from the media which mention crimes and misbehavior
(including sexual abuse) of only Christians and Christian
clergy (early-mid 2009, some of these NGs). In samples of
his posts, the only exceptions are rare mentions of similar
problems with Muslims/Jews but not Hindu clergy. He
portrays himself as an "advocate" for Vedic Hinduism, but,
among samples of his posts, one finds no reports of
these crimes or misbehaviors among Hindus or Hindu clergy,
despite the fact that Google searches easily find reports
even in the mainstream media of India. Several other
authors of posts, including myself, on these NGs have also
pointed this out to him but they received no
acknowledgement.
He has quoted three sentences from the Bible, out of
context, and without the benefit of interpretation, to
condemn Jesus Christ, and declare in other posts that he
is a terrorist.
He is also concerned, understandably, about terrorism but
places all of the emphasis on Muslims/Islam when, in fact,
there is also a significant amount of terrorism that does
not involve Muslms/Islam, but we get no qualification on
his anti-Muslim/Islam position.
Advice: In connection with the issue of offensive intollerance,
Maharaj's posts represent bias and prejudice that fall
under the jurisdiction of "hate crimes" (Google on
"hate crimes" for many links). In connection with fairness
and justice, Mr. Maharaj would be investing his time more
productively and more purposefully if he were to simply
lobby for laws (more possible in India, his favored
country?) to outlaw or discriminate against non-Hindus,
or work for laws and enforcements to resolve religious
conflict (in India, which is one of his favorite topics).
The problem with his preoccupation with the preservation
and promotion of Hindu culture needs to be re-examined in
the context that various religions are known to have evolved
over time and even among Hindus in India there is a range
of politics/culture today (eg. Google on "hindu
nationalists"
and "hindu fascists" for large numbers of links for strong
political interests beyond tollerance, fairness, and
inclusiveness and which involve national debate about what
it means to be a Hindu)
In sympathy to those who are persecuted because of their religion:
It is advised that you consider the concept of "freedom of
religion" which means that YOU should be free to practice
whatever religion you are most comfortable with and your
neighbors should be free to practice whatever religion
they are comfortable with even if it is different from
YOURS and as long as everyone tollerates each other's
peaceful practices. The desireable answer to strife is to
create tollerance laws and enforce laws against violence
and crimes with local police and judicial processes.
Q2. Does "Jai Maharaj" (aka Jay Stevens) have significant anti-American
and anti-white attitudes?
Origin: He often posts copies and pasts only negative news about
life in the US, and never posts any positive news about
any redeming qualities about the USA. He has made
reference in at least one of the sampled posts to
anti-white sentiments.
Advice: The absence, or relative absence, of posts involving
negative information/reports/events among Hindus or in
India (his two favored subjects), or in any other
country/peoples in the world, does mean that he has
deep-seated sentiments contrary to anti-racism laws and
that he may be at least partially disaffected with the USA,
his place of claimed residence.
Q3. Does "Jai Maharaj's" (aka Jay Stevens) promotion of astrology on his
commercial (since a "paypal" link is present) website represent an
anti-science attitude that promotes superstition as a basis for
making decisions in life and is therefore dangerous to the public
well being?
Origin: Astrology has its origin in primitive and unenlightened
beliefs about cause and effect, understanding natural
phenomena, and questions like "What is knowledge?" The
positions of the heavenly bodies were more predictable
than the "gods" but surely the "gods" _were_ some of
those bodies, and thus a large number of "consultants"
developed good incomes from a complex "prediction" or
"forecast" business. It was not until relatively recent
times that some feisty underling asked if any of the
predictions came true that we had the beginnings of
empirical science. Astrology is based on superstition
and ignorance.
Advice: Jai Maharaj (aka Jay Stevens) would be well advised to
de-emphasize astrology marketing on his website and his
posts and concentrate on replacing superstition and
ignorance with solid science, healthy, constructive,
and purposeful pursuits and information that benefits
everyone and he can still charge a fee for this.
Q4, How much spamming does Jai Maharaj (aka Jay Stevens) do?
Origin: Prior FAQs complain that "Maharaj" does simple copy and
paste from on line media to newsgroup posts and these
articles are much longer than usual newsgroup posts
in discussion threads.
Answer: From one newsserver carrying alt.fan.jai-maharaj there
were a total of about 3,600 posts from 3/9/09 to 5/12/09,
slightly more than two months. Out of those, he posted
1,453 about 40%. At the beginning of the period of study,
about 20 other authors were making posts and by
the end of the period this dropped off to about 7-9, thus
suggesting that flooding the newsgroup with large numbers
of posts had the effect of intimidating, bullying, or
boring people away. Two thirds of his "lifted" material
comes from www.freerepublic.com, and when one does a Google
search on that URL, one gets the clear impression that it
is a far-right wing website and appears to be in trouble
now with copyright infringment litigation.
Advice: Mr. Maharaj would be advised to consolidate his "daily
news digests" into one large post with titles and
URL linkS, instead of up to 20-30 per day.
Q5. What is the relationship between "Jai Maharaj" and "Jay Stevens"?
Origin: Large numbers of authors of posts on these newsgroups
have claimed that "Jai Maharaj" is really "Jay Stevens."
Thus the common reference to the phrase "Jai Maharaj (aka
Jay Stevens).
Answer: At least two other FAQs can be found by Google
Searches which offer explanations. An anti-Jay Stevens
newsgroup is: alt.flame.jay-stevens where both
anti-Maharaj/Stevens authors and pro-Maharaj/Stevens
authors post material.
Advice: Jai Maharaj should address this problem.
Q6. Does "Jai Maharaj" (aka Jay Stevens) really have a "dr." degree?
Origin: A slightly smaller number of authors of posts have
questioned whether he really has some advanced degree.
Advice: Jai Maharaj should address this problem.
Q7. Is "Jai Maharaj (aka Jay Stevens)" vindictive?
Origin: Anyone who disagrees with Maharaj/Stevens, or calls
attention to problems with him is likely to be
counter-attacked by him not with counter-arguments, data,
or valid refutations, but by personal attacks such as: i)
revealing or attempting to reveal the true identity behind
any alias or pen name of the original author, ii) attempts
to search the archives for any "dirt" or gossip or rumors
on the original author in an attempt to smear the original
author, and iii) to make allegations and conclusions about
people that are bizzare twists on what original authors say.
Analysis: Mr. Jai Maharaj (aka Jay Stevens) may understandably be
annoyed with doubters of his true identity and those who
disagree with his philosophies and actions, but the
"knee-jerk" character of his response certainly indicates
that he can lose his temper and this kind of outburst might
be a clue that maybe there really is a connection or
relationship between "Jai Maharaj" and "Jay Stevens"as all
the rumors say there is. After all, Bill Clinton denied
for so long any "improper relationship" with a female
intern despite all the rumors and in the end it turned out
that all the rumors were true.

23) Who is this "Dr. Jai Maharaj" person who posts so prolifically?
Answer: This person has generated so much annoyance in this and other groups
that Roy Johnson (***@shell.com) created a FAQ about him. See that FAQ for
full details. (If you cannot find it in alt.astrology, look in rec.food.veg.)
Briefly, his legal name appears to be Jay Stevens (e.g., this name appears in
the articles of incorporation for his "Mantra Corporation"). He used to post
under that name in other electronic forums, but when he discovered the internet,
he decided to use a more Indian-sounding name, and began calling himself "Jai
Maharaj." Lately, this name has evolved into "Dr. Jai Maharaj." In 1990, he was
claiming that his birth name was Jai Mathura. He has many internet accounts, and
he sometimes edits the headers of postings to obscure their origin and author.
He is believed to create alternate personas and post under additional aliases to
give the impression that he has supporters. Such personas are often recognised
by their tendency to use the term "Swami" for him. He has a "library" of
articles that he posts, re-posts, and re-posts again, ad nauseam; this accounts
for his ubiquity on the net. Each posting contains a .sig file that advertises
his vedic astrology business, so the large volume of his postings appears to be
part of a marketing scheme. (The official purpose of Mantra Corporation is
listed as "business consulting, marketing, advertising and related services."
Despite anything he might say, this company is *not* a non-profit organisation.)
Netters have dubbed him "Jai Mirage" because they think he is a fake -- a con
man. Don't be taken in. And please, please, please don't respond to his postings;
he generates enough net "noise" as it is. Just put his most usual alias (Jai
Maharaj) and/or all of his net addresses in your kill file for this newsgroup (see
the Jai Maharaj FAQ for a list of these addresses). See # 22 for instructions
about editing a kill file. For the curious, he once claimed that his birth data
are October 7, 1946, 9:15 am (-5:30 h), New Delhi, India, 77E12, 28N36. Oh, and
by the way, he is in the habit of posting a slightly edited version of this FAQ,
changing this answer into an advertisement for himself, inserting a diatribe
against western astrology at the beginning of the file, and putting his most
common alias (Jai Maharaj) at the head of the list of contributors to the FAQ!
There are two terms for this activity: plagiarism, and copyright violation. (The
latter is one of his favourite activities; he often posts large excerpts from
books without the authors' permission, and sometimes without giving the authors
credit.)

Data
1. Who is Jai Maharaj?
Jai Maharaj is the 'Voice of Mantra Corporation'. Though it is seen as just one
poster posting all the stuff on Usenet, it is widely suspected that Jai is not
the only contributor.
2. What newsgroups are home to Jai Maharaj?
You're kidding. Any newsgroup on Usenet, forums on Compuserve, practically
anything anywhere anytime is home to Jai Maharaj. Just post on any of the
following groups on Noosenet and Jai is very eager always to share his wisdom
with any group.
Jai's wisdom is presently available on the following groups:
alt.astrology
sci.med.nutrition
rec.food.veg
soc.culture.indian
alt.culture.hawaii (he says "Come over to alt.culture.hawaii" but he
never posts there)

3. What do you need to do to get in the good books of Jai Maharaj?
Well, say that Vedic astrology is good. Don't ever be a animal killer/eater.
Also see Q. 4. Also ask Virendra on alt.astrology.
4. What do you need to do to get in the bad books of Jai Maharaj?
Just flame him on Usenet for 5 days. It helps if you are quite "popular" or "widely
known" on a newsgroup. Else you aren't worth Jai Maharaj's time. Say that Vedic
Astrology is a fake. Or that Mantra Corporation is misusing Internet/Usenet by
advertizing using the 4-line .sig.
5. What is common between Jai Maharaj and John Palmer?
Both have claim to being one of the most "popular" persons on Usenet. Jai has
accused lots of people with "LIBEL". JP has slapped virtual lawyers on many.
6. What is different between Jai Maharaj and John Palmer?
John has his own machine and his own domain. Jai gets on to U. of Hawaii and
accesses Freenets from there. John has a knowledge of sendsys while Jai doesn't.
Jai is quite known to accuse people of sending mail bombs when there wasn't any
sent. But Jai is working hard to be a JP.
7. What is the mark of a Jai Maharaj posting?
It always starts with a -=Namaste=- and ends with a -=Om Shanti=-. oops.. sorry.
Always ends with the 4 line .sig. He posts usually from his accounts as:
***@freenet.carleton.ca
?***@freenet.victoria.bc.ca
***@cleveland.freenet.edu
Your tax dollars at work!
Till date, he has never been seen from a commercial account. Once in a while,
mantra corporation (which has the same mcimail number apparently as ***@mcimail.com)
uses the UTexas gateway to pass out its distilled wisdom.
8. What do I do if I don't want to see Jai's postings at all?
There is a wonderful mechanism on bulletin board systems called "Killfile". Use
it. If you are annoyed, you can send mail to postmaster@<node> where node is
the freenet he is using. Also you can send a nice 'thank you' note for every
posting he does. He appreciates it very much.
9. Why this FAQ?
There are countless people on Usenet who still don't know Jai Maharaj and this
humble effort on my part will probably enable people from far and wide to get to
know the personality of Jai. btw, there is also a alt.fan.jai-maharaj. Please
spread the Jai Maharaj message for the good of the world.
Contributions to the FAQ most welcome. If anyone wants to take over the FAQ, you
are most welcome to. Please post everything on the newsgroup. Every effort has
been made to present facts. Corrections welcome on that count from anyone, be it
from Jai Maharaj or John Palmer.

This is the Jai FAQ for rec.food.veg. I used to say it has few sources, but the
response has been so great that I have lots of sources. Still some inaccuracies,
but unlike Jai, we're trying to propagate the truth.
1. Isn't Jai just a well-meaning, enthusiastic vegetarian with a poor
understanding of netiquette?
A: No, and it is extremely important to understand this. Jai is a malicious
troll intent on introducing as much noise into various newsgroups as possible,
specifically noise about himself. It is pointless to try to reason with him,
pointless to instruct him in proper netiquette, and not worth your while to
debunk his arguments because he will simply repost them. Jai was voted "Kook of

of politics/culture today (eg.

Netters have dubbed him "Jai Mirage" because they think he is a fake -- a con
man. Don't be taken in. And please, please, please don't respond to his postings;
he generates enough net "noise" as it is.

Jai anon.penet.fi. Jai Jai Maharaj. Jai Julf.

The Kook of the Month for May/June, "Jai Maharaj," has added soc.culture.usa to

the FAQ on him.
He'll reply to this with old, edited posts that "prove" that I'm a forger. They
are discussed in item #17.
The upshot is: try to ignore him. He's not fooling anyone.

Jai was voted "Kook of
the Month" for May/June 1995:
